Vegas calls in markers as Reid backs e-poker

By William Spain

"Internet gambling - by whatever form - is essentially a beach ball being held underwater by the U.S. government," said Joseph Weinert, senior vice president of Spectrum Gaming Group, an industry consultancy "Inevitably, it's going to burst to the surface."

He noted that the U.S. is well behind Europe and other regions in the area, and "the casino industry - both the commercial and Indian sectors - largely supports the legalization of Internet poker. We see the eventual passage of such legislation as the opening of the Internet gambling door."

And, "once that happens, online slot machines, table games and even sports betting will follow at some point," he said.
