Mount Airy's payout rates continue to fall

Atlantic City averaged a 91.2 percent payout over recent months while Las Vegas averaged about 92.5 percent for the first four months of 2010, according to Bill LaPenta, director of financial analysis for New Jersey-based Spectrum Gaming Group/GIO.

The popularity of new "penny" slot games has grown over the last several years, and such games tend to carry a somewhat lower payout percentage overall than many higher-denomination games, according to LaPenta.

"So as these machines have grown in their proportion on the casino floors and in their proportion of play volume, this has tended to draw down the overall payout rates at one or more casinos over time," he said.
